Overview

Tally is an expense tracking app for iPhone built by A Simple Life. We designed Tally with privacy at its core — your financial data lives on your device and in your personal iCloud account. Tally does not operate any servers, does not require an account, and does not sell your personal information.

This policy explains what information is collected, how it is used, and with whom it may be shared when you use Tally.

Information We Collect

Information you provide

When you log an expense, Tally stores the following data locally on your device:

  • Expense amount and currency
  • Date
  • Merchant name
  • Description and notes
  • Tags and tag groups you create
  • Receipt photos or document files you attach

None of this data is transmitted to Tally or A Simple Life servers.

iCloud sync

If you have iCloud enabled on your device, Tally syncs your expense data across your personal Apple devices using Apple CloudKit. This data is stored in your private iCloud account and is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy. A Simple Life cannot access your iCloud data.

You can disable iCloud sync at any time in your device's Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud.

Receipt scanning (OCR)

When you use Snap Receipt or Upload Image, Tally can read text from your receipt using optical character recognition (OCR). This processing is performed entirely on your device using Apple's Vision framework. Receipt images are never sent to any external server for processing.

Usage information (analytics)

Tally does not collect analytics or usage data directly. Some third-party SDKs integrated into the app may collect limited, anonymous usage signals as described in the Third-Party Services section below.

How We Use Information

Information you enter into Tally is used solely to provide the app's features — displaying your expenses, generating exports, filtering by tags, and syncing across your devices via iCloud. We do not use your expense data for advertising, profiling, or any purpose beyond operating the app on your device.

Third-Party Services

RevenueCat (Subscriptions)

Tally uses RevenueCat to manage Tally Pro subscriptions and in-app purchases. When you purchase a subscription, RevenueCat receives your Apple App Store receipt to verify and manage your subscription status. RevenueCat does not receive your expense data. See RevenueCat's Privacy Policy.

Google Mobile Ads (Free tier)

Free-tier users of Tally are shown advertisements served by Google Mobile Ads. Google may collect device identifiers and usage signals to serve and measure ads in accordance with Google's Privacy Policy. Tally Pro subscribers do not see ads and are not subject to Google's ad data collection within the app.

You can limit ad tracking on your device at any time via Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.

Apple (iCloud, App Store, Vision)

Core functionality of Tally relies on Apple frameworks and services including CloudKit, Vision, and the App Store. Apple's data practices are governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.

Data Retention and Deletion

Your expense data is retained on your device and in your iCloud account for as long as you keep the Tally app installed and iCloud sync enabled.

To delete your data:

  • Individual expenses — swipe left on any expense in the app and tap Delete, or open the expense and tap the trash icon.
  • All data — deleting the Tally app from your device removes all locally stored data. If iCloud sync is enabled, you can also delete Tally's iCloud data via Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage.

Data Security

Because Tally stores your data locally and via your personal iCloud account, your data benefits from the security protections built into iOS and iCloud, including device encryption and end-to-end encrypted iCloud backups (when Advanced Data Protection is enabled).

A Simple Life does not store your financial data on any external server, so there is no centralised database that could be breached.

Children's Privacy

Tally is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the app, please contact us and we will take steps to delete that information.

Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights regarding your personal data, including the right to access, correct, or delete it. Because Tally stores data on your device and in your iCloud account, you have direct control over your data through the app and your device settings.

For any privacy concerns or requests, please contact us at the address below.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page reflects when the policy was last revised. We will notify you of material changes by updating the policy within the app or on this page.
